Pale, low-saturation pastels in different hue families generally combine easily, since they share a similar soft, muted intensity.

Pastels are high in lightness and low in chroma, so they sit close together in the part of colour space where hue differences are hardest to see. That is why almost any pastels can be worn together without clashing — and also why an all-pastel outfit can look washed out: with lightness and saturation nearly equal everywhere, nothing gives the eye an edge to rest on. The fix is a single deliberate difference, usually one piece a few steps deeper.
