Cloakroom colours

A small downstairs WC — the room most often cited as the place to try a colour or pattern that would be too much anywhere else.

Lighting note: Cloakrooms are usually internal with no window at all, so the colour will be seen almost entirely under one artificial light source. Whatever that bulb's colour temperature is will dominate the result.

What to expect from this room

Very small, with little wall area, so material and paint costs stay low even for expensive choices
Occupied briefly and alone, which makes an intense colour or pattern enjoyable rather than tiring
Almost always contains fixed white sanitaryware that a scheme has to work around

Fixed materials: White sanitaryware is effectively permanent and is usually a cool, bright white — a warm scheme has to be committed enough that the contrast reads as deliberate.

Directions that tend to work: Deep, saturated colours and bold patterns are the conventional recommendation, and colour drenching works particularly well here because there is little architectural detail to lose.

Colours that can be difficult: Mid-toned neutrals tend to make a small internal room feel merely dim rather than either bright or dramatic — the two extremes generally work better than the middle.
