Short answer
Mostly, nobody can say. Of the 91 announcements Colourwise has verified, 2 have any independent observed evidence at all, and even those show only a coinciding signal rather than adoption caused by the announcement. What can be measured is the announcements themselves: which colour families each authority favours, how that has shifted by decade, and how rarely the authorities agree.
To say a prediction came true you need three things: a clear claim (this colour will be adopted in this sector), a measurement of that sector afterwards, and a baseline for what would have happened anyway. Colour-of-the-year announcements supply the first only loosely — most say a colour captures a mood rather than that it will sell. Public, independent sales data by colour barely exists outside cars; paint makers know what they tint but do not publish it, and fashion sell-through data is proprietary. Without the second and third, an article saying a colour 'was everywhere' that year is anecdote, and an article saying it flopped is too.
Counting Pantone's selections by broad family (Colourwise's reading of each colour, not a measurement) shows a clear drift. The 2000s were dominated by blues — Cerulean, Aqua Sky, Blue Turquoise, Blue Iris, and Turquoise opening the next decade — with one neutral, Sand Dollar. The 2010s spread across greens, purples, oranges and the first two-colour pairing, with no neutral at all. From 2020 the picks include the first brown (Mocha Mousse, 2025) and the first white (Cloud Dancer, 2026). Whatever the announcements predict, they themselves have become quieter recently, which is a finding about the forecaster, not the market.
The family counts are in the table on this page and are recomputed from the dataset whenever a record changes.
If colour-of-the-year choices reflected one strong underlying trend, independent authorities would converge. In this dataset they seldom do. Across every year recorded, no single broad family was chosen by three or more authorities in the same year; the most any year manages is two, such as green from both Sherwin-Williams (Evergreen Fog) and Benjamin Moore (October Mist) for 2022, or green from both AkzoNobel (Soulful Sage) and Sherwin-Williams (Celery) for 2027. Coincidences of two are what chance alone would often produce with a dozen families and five or six authorities. Low agreement does not prove the forecasts wrong, but it does undercut the idea that each year has one colour.
Two records carry a 'partial signal'. Pantone's 2016 pairing included Rose Quartz, a pale pink, and fashion press in 2017 described a pale 'millennial pink' as the colour of the moment — but the same reports date that pink's spread to about 2012, before the announcement. Pantone's 2021 pairing included Ultimate Gray, and grey's share of US cars did rise sharply — from 3.6% of 1996 model-year cars to 22.9% of 2025 ones — but that rise began two decades before and Pantone was not addressing car makers. In both cases the announcement appears to have followed a trend already under way. That is the most common honest reading of a colour of the year that 'came true'.

Why: Selective recall and photographs chosen to fit, with no baseline year for comparison.
Fix: Ask for a share figure before and after, from a source independent of the forecaster, in the sector the forecast addressed.
Why: Brands that bought the forecast designed to it, so presence partly measures the forecast's influence.
Fix: Look for adoption in sectors or markets that did not receive the forecast, or for sales rather than presence.
Each statement is labelled by kind — established fact, a standard’s requirement, observed market data, a convention, or Colourwise’s own interpretation or analysis — with the strength of the evidence behind it.
Colourwise analysisModerate evidence
Of the 91 colour-of-the-year announcements in Colourwise's dataset, 2 have any independent observed evidence of what followed; the rest are recorded as not measured.
Based on: Counted from the outcome field of every announcement in the trends dataset; an outcome other than 'not measured' requires a cited independent source.
Caveat: Reflects what Colourwise could locate; proprietary sales data may exist that is not public.

Pantone's selections include four blues in 2000–2009, no neutral in 2010–2019, and its first brown (2025) and first white (2026) in the 2020s.
Based on: Computed by grouping Pantone's announcements in the dataset by decade and by Colourwise's broad family reading of each colour.
Caveat: Family assignments are editorial: a colour such as Blue Iris or Living Coral sits between families and could be counted differently.

Colourwise analysisModerate evidence
In no year recorded did three or more authorities choose a colour in the same broad family.
Based on: Computed by grouping every single-family announcement in the dataset by year and family and counting distinct authorities.
Caveat: Depends on the broad family buckets used; finer buckets would show even less agreement.

FactLimited evidence
Fashion press in 2017 dated the pale 'millennial pink' from about 2012, before Pantone's 2016 pairing that included a pale pink.
Caveat: Press observation without sales data; the start date is the writer's estimate.
