Modern tortoiseshell is a patterned, partly translucent plastic, usually cellulose acetate, imitating the mottled material once cut from turtle shells. Light enters the lighter amber areas, scatters inside and comes back tinted warm, while the dark flecks absorb it; the result is a frame with many small lightness steps rather than one solid edge. Because the pattern mixes light and dark, it sits at a middle lightness overall and its warm amber glow comes from inside the material rather than from the surface.
The material: Because the pattern runs through the material rather than being printed on it, where the dark and amber areas fall differs from frame to frame, even within one model.
