A working room where hard-wearing, easily cleaned surfaces matter more than they do elsewhere, and where colour is often used more boldly precisely because the room is small and not lived in.
Fixed materials: Appliances are almost always white or stainless steel and cannot be changed, so the scheme has to accommodate them rather than the other way round.
Directions that tend to work: Deeper, more saturated colours work well here because the room is small, briefly occupied and already broken up by units — the same colour that would be relentless in a living room reads as a pleasant surprise in a utility room.
Colours that can be difficult: Very pale neutrals can look institutional against white appliances, and show scuffs and splashes more than a mid-tone does.
