Verdigris #43b3ae
Verdigris works here because it carries a cool cyan at chroma 33, restrained enough to sit at substantial scale without dominating. Against the grey it gives low lightness contrast, which is what lets the two be read as separate elements rather than as one indistinct block. It sits where it does because the brief was calm, and calm comes mostly from restraint in chroma and from keeping the elements close in lightness, so the eye is not repeatedly pulled to a boundary. Hue matters far less than most advice suggests: a low-chroma terracotta is calmer than a vivid blue.
The reasoning in full
- Hue.
- Sits 34 degrees from the grey in hue — far enough apart to be read as a different colour, which is what keeps it out of the band where an attempted match looks like a failed one.
- Lightness.
- At L*67 against the grey, this gives low lightness contrast. Lightness is what the eye separates elements by, so this is doing more work than the hue is.
- Saturation.
- Chroma 33, within the range a sofa carries without taking over the room. Saturation, not hue, is what decides whether a colour is restful or insistent.
- Undertone.
- Cool-based, which governs what it will agree with. Undertone conflict — a cool-based colour beside a warm-based one at similar lightness — is the most common genuine clash, and far more noticeable than a difference in hue.
- Temperature.
- The room already pulls warm, so expect this to read warmer and more yellow in place than it does on a chart.
- Visual scale.
- A sofa occupies a large but not dominant share of the view, which is the most forgiving position in a room — big enough to set a direction, small enough that getting it slightly wrong is not a repaint.
- Material.
- Oak is the material this has to live with. Oak is a mid-toned, distinctly golden wood, and a large area of it behaves as a warm secondary light source. Colours placed against it read warmer and slightly more yellow than they do on a chart, which flatters warm neutrals and can turn a carefully chosen cool grey faintly green.
- Lighting.
- No lighting condition was specified. That matters more than it sounds — a colour is not a property of a surface but of what that surface does with the light available, so the same choice can behave quite differently in a north-facing room and a south-facing one.
What could go wrong. Reducing contrast so far that the space reads as blank rather than calm — calm still needs something to look at, usually supplied by texture rather than colour.
If you don’t want that
- Teal keeps warmth Expect it to read as noticeably deeper. That is the trade being made in order to keep its warmth.
- Camel keeps lightness Expect it to read as warmer in undertone and in the orange family rather than the cyan one. That is the trade being made in order to keep how light it is.
- Steel Blue keeps chroma Expect it to read as slightly deeper and in the blue family rather than the cyan one. That is the trade being made in order to keep how saturated it is.
