Plan a bathroom around its whites

A bathroom is small, reflective and often short of daylight. Almost nothing in it can be changed easily, and a glazed white basin sets the standard for every other colour. The planner shows what happens when those surfaces meet.

Choose whatever you already have, and the analysis starts from there.

Why: The analysis needs at least one surface to work from.
What mattered most: Nothing yet.
What would change this: Telling the planner which way the space faces, or what lamps you intend to use, changes the lighting findings. So would replacing the largest surface.
Most likely failure: Judging everything from small samples in a showroom, which hides how large areas interact in your own light.
Safer option: Cool white for the painted walls. It stays quiet and leans the same way as the fixed surfaces, without being a near-match to any of them.
Bolder option: Muted aubergine. It gives the fixed materials something definite to stand against. Sample it at size, because deep colours change more with the light than pale ones.
Material and light: Glossy surfaces reflect their surroundings and matt ones do not, so the same colour reads differently across the two. Judge samples under the lamps you will actually use.

Why the basin decides so much

White sanitaryware against warm tilePhysical mechanism: Glazed white ware is the brightest, cleanest surface in the room, so the eye adopts it as the reference white. A warm off-white tile beside it reads as discoloured, though it would look creamy alone. See tile and basin together, not on a white shop wall.
White sanitaryware against cool tilePhysical mechanism: A bright white basin suits cool tile, but a soft white one may look yellow against it. Not every white suite is the same white.
GroutPhysical mechanism: Grout changes a tiled wall more than people expect, because a strong lightness step makes the joints read before the tiles do. It can be a feature with a plain tile, or a distraction in a small room. Pale floor grout shows dirt sooner.
Small-room scaleDesign convention: A bathroom is seen close up, so pattern fills the view. Keep a strong pattern to one plane and let the rest run quiet. Large plain tiles with few joints read as a calmer surface.
Glossy surfacesPhysical mechanism: Glazed tile, mirror, chrome and glass all pass light around the room. Colour in one surface can reach others, and a strong towel or wall colour may show in the reflections.
LightingPhysical mechanism: Where there is little or no daylight, the lamp is effectively the whole of the light. Whites and greys shift with it, so the lamp belongs in the colour decision. A mirror light also determines how skin looks, which matters more here than anywhere else.

Which metals can share a bathroom?

Metals are compared on temperature, and a neutral finish such as black gets along with most. Buy taps, shower and accessories from one range where you can, since nominally matching finishes can differ between makers.
