Metallic finishes contain reflective particles that scatter light directionally rather than diffusely, producing a shifting, lustrous look that changes with viewing angle and light position — this is very difficult to represent accurately on a screen or in a flat colour swatch.
Metallic paints contain flat, reflective flakes suspended in the binder. Those flakes settle roughly parallel to the surface as the paint dries, so each one acts as a tiny mirror — and because they are not all perfectly aligned, the surface returns light differently as the viewing angle or the light position changes. That angular dependence is the whole effect, and it is exactly what a fixed image cannot record.
Matters most on feature areas seen from several angles and under directional light — a fireplace surround, a ceiling detail, furniture. Matters least under flat, diffuse light, where the flakes all catch the light equally and the finish collapses to an ordinary flat colour.
