Limewash is a mineral finish rather than a plastic film: the colour sits in a porous, crystalline layer that scatters light from a small depth below the surface rather than reflecting it from a flat plane. That is why limewash reads as soft and slightly cloudy, with visible variation across a wall, where a modern emulsion reads as one flat, even colour. The variation is inherent to the finish, not a defect — it comes from the way the material is applied and from how it cures, so no two walls are identical.
Lime and mineral finishes cure by reacting chemically rather than by forming a plastic film, producing a porous crystalline layer. Light enters that layer, scatters from crystal faces at a small depth below the surface, and returns from slightly different depths across the wall — which is what produces the soft, cloudy, subtly varying quality. A film-forming emulsion has no such depth, which is why it reads flat by comparison.
Matters most on breathable substrates — lime plaster, solid masonry, older buildings — where these finishes are chosen for how the wall behaves as well as how it looks. Matters least on modern sealed plasterboard, where a mineral finish loses much of its rationale and is harder to apply successfully.

Practical advice
Because the colour varies across the surface, a small sample is even less representative of the finished wall than it is for ordinary paint — a limewash sample needs to be large enough to show the mottling. Mineral finishes are also strongly affected by what is underneath: they behave differently on bare plaster than on a previously painted or sealed wall, and manufacturers specify particular substrates and primers for that reason. Follow the specific product's own instructions rather than treating it as a drop-in replacement for emulsion.
