Two colours merging into one shape
What is happening. A camera records lightness far more faithfully than it records hue, and lens and sensor together compress the tonal range. Two colours that differ mainly in hue but sit at the same lightness are distinguished by the eye and not by the file.
What you see. Two people standing together read as one silhouette, or a jacket and trousers that were clearly different colours in the room arrive as a single block.
The fix. Separate by lightness rather than by hue. A gap of roughly 20 lightness steps survives almost any camera; a hue difference at the same lightness does not.
The lightest thing losing all detail
What is happening. Sensors have a hard ceiling. Once a region exceeds it, every pixel there records the same maximum value and the information is gone — it cannot be recovered in editing, unlike a shadow.
What you see. A white shirt or a pale dress becomes a flat white shape with no fabric texture, folds or seams, while everything else in the frame is correctly exposed.
The fix. Off-white rather than pure white in heavily photographed settings. It costs almost nothing visually in the room and preserves the detail in every picture.
Deep colours becoming a silhouette
What is happening. The same ceiling has a floor. Very deep colours photographed against a dark background fall below the sensor's noise threshold, so the shape survives and the surface does not.
What you see. A navy or black outfit against a dark venue wall becomes an outline. Tailoring, texture and even the difference between two garments disappear.
The fix. Either lift the outfit off the background with a lighter element — a shirt, a pocket square, a bag — or accept the silhouette deliberately.
Everything shifting towards one colour
What is happening. Human vision adapts to the ambient light and keeps colours roughly constant; a camera sets one white point for the whole frame. Under warm venue lighting the camera either leaves everything amber or corrects it and drives the cool colours grey.
What you see. Cream reads yellow, pale blue reads grey, and a carefully chosen cool pastel arrives looking dirty.
The fix. Depth and warmth survive warm light. Pale cool colours are the most vulnerable thing you can wear to an evening event.
A bright streak across a shiny fabric
What is happening. A high-sheen surface returns a direct reflection of the light source. Add a flash a couple of metres away and the reflection is orders of magnitude brighter than everything else, so it clips immediately.
What you see. A white streak or patch across a satin dress or a metallic jacket, in roughly the same place in every flash photograph.
The fix. Keep sheen moderate where flash photography is likely, or accept it as part of the fabric's character — it is not avoidable by standing differently.
A fine pattern shimmering or banding
What is happening. When the spacing of a repeating pattern approaches the spacing of the sensor's pixel grid, the two interfere and produce a false pattern that is not on the garment at all.
What you see. Tight stripes, small checks and fine herringbone develop a rainbow shimmer or a wandering banded texture, most visibly in video and at certain distances.
The fix. Larger patterns or plain fabric where video is involved. The effect is distance-dependent, so it can appear in some frames and not others, which makes it impossible to check in advance.
Two light sources disagreeing
What is happening. A room lit by both daylight through a window and warm artificial light has two different white points at once. The camera can only correct for one, so the other stays wrong.
What you see. One side of a face or an outfit reads warm and the other cool, within the same photograph, and no editing fixes both.
The fix. Neutral and mid-depth colours are the least damaged by this. Very pale colours show the split most, because there is nothing else in them to look at.
Event lighting changing the colour outright
What is happening. Coloured LED lighting has a spiky, incomplete spectrum. A fabric can only reflect wavelengths that are present, so under a source missing most of the red end, a red dress has nothing to reflect and goes brown or black.
What you see. A colour that simply is not the colour any more — most dramatically with saturated reds and deep greens under stage or party lighting.
The fix. Strong, clear colours survive better than subtle ones, and neutrals survive best of all. Pale pastels take on the room's colour completely.
